The Give & Take of the Co-op program

CO-OP Q&A:

Behind the Alumni Faculty Interviews

former Visiting Assistant Professor of Cooperative Education (’94-’95, ’95-’96, and ’03-’04)

It is a little known fact that 15% of our current Antioch faculty are alumni of the College—which means, just like current students, each of them participated in the co-op program in order to complete their graduation requirements.

Inspired by a question from a student who, in a Fall ’03 Community Meeting, inquired of members of the Renewal Commission about where students go after Antioch, I interviewed several faculty alums to find out about their Antioch & post-Antioch career paths. Because I thought their stories would be particularly inspiring to current students, the interviews originally appeared in the Spring ’04 issues of Antioch’s student newspaper, The Record.

Some of the questions I asked included the following:

What was your major at Antioch, and how quickly did you choose that field of study?

What were your co-ops, and where? Which was the best, and which the worst? Did you ever leave, or almost leave? If you stayed, were you glad you did? Did you ever take a specific class to prepare for a co-op, or come back and take a specific class because of a co-op?

What are two or three surprising turns your life has taken since you were a student at Antioch? Have you earned any awards or special professional distinctions, and would you have predicted those when you were a student? Can you relate any of those to any of the learning or exposure you gleaned from any of your co-ops?

In this issue of The Antiochian you will find excerpts from three of those interviews, with Bob Devine ’67, Dennie Eagleson ’71, and Louise Smith ’77.
