Highlights from The Best of the Yellow Springs
Police Report
The Best of the Yellow Springs Police Report,
edited and illustrated by Herndon Gallery curator, Julia Dzwonkoski
and Antioch graduate Kye Potter '04,
is a publication culled from the weekly "Police Report"
columns published over a 20-year period (1983-2003) in the
Yellow Springs News. Based on records kept by the Yellow
Springs Police Department, the column documents police activity
and incidents reported to the police during the previous week by
local residents, College students, and visitors to Yellow Springs.
"In addition to these various functions, the 'Police Report'
is a significant social document, reflecting the particular character
and quality of life in Yellow Springs, Ohio," the Editors write
in their introduction to the publication. "Our aim, in compiling
this survey, was to bring together police items that struck us as
unusual, startling, funny, obscure, mysterious, mundane and sometimes
unbelievable."

Visiting Professor from Kenya
By Emily Aaron '04
Antioch College is in the process of establishing an exchange
with Mesano University in Maseno, Kenya. The initial stages of this
exchange have already been completed, with a visit of Professor
Charles Ongadi Nyambuga. Nyambuga arrived on March 1 and stayed
on campus until April 15, 2004.
Nyambuga is a lecturer of Communication and Media Technology at
Mesano University. During his stay, he visited with the community
and made presentations in several classes, including Journalism,
Peace Theories and Paths, and Introduction to African American Studies.
On March 11, he presented his paper on "The Media, Ethnicity
and Conflict: A Kenyan Experience" in the Herndon Gallery of
South Hall.
While at Antioch, Nyambuga hoped to facilitate a continuing scholarly
exchange between Mesano and Antioch. Mr. Nyambuga will continue
to work with peace studies professor Patricia Mische, African/African
American studies professor Jahwara Giddings and Co-op Faculty member
Eric Miller. These three faculty members will be making the journey
to Maseno in the summer of 2004. The group hopes to establish a
program that will allow a steady exchange of not only faculty but
students between the two universities. It is an exciting prospect
for both institutions.
The community welcomed Charles Ongadi Nyambuga and is excited
about the budding relationship with Mesano University.
