We started off the summer with our second potluck social on Friday, June 22, and added some new names to the list of folks interested in alumni events, as well as those who’d like to be involved in setting our agenda. Soon after the potluck, we held a steering committee meeting that was open to everyone and talked about our short-term goals.

Top of the list was raising awareness of our re-energized group. So post-Labor Day, we conducted our own little phone-a-thon to build our database and invite new people to the next potluck social on October 12, once again at 122 Maryland Avenue NE, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Last July’s steering committee participants included Sid Paige ’66, Joan Straumanis ’57, David Roger Allen ’66, alumni Board member Warren McKay ’59, Danielle Knight ’96, and Alice Tracy ’77. They’re doing calling as are Josh Bowers ’77, Laurent Abelin ’96, Steve Spector ’76, Karen Mulhauser ’65 and Carl Reeverts ’70.

The DC/Baltimore group is big. Even before our phone-a-thon began, our e-mail list had grown to 275 addresses and our entire database included 329 people in the greater DC and Baltimore areas.

Another goal is to develop our own web site and Rachel Borgatti ’00 has signed on. When it’s up we’d like to get it linked to the College site. At that point, I’m interested in starting an e-mail newsletter with profiles of local alumni and updates on events. Those who attended the July steering committee meeting were in support of this effort.

In November, we’ll be looking forward to new Admissions counselor Seth Gordon’s ’00 visit. We’ll announce on our e-mail list an event for alumni to meet Seth.

Throughout the year, we’ve been helping students and alums make connections. Area alumni continue to host prospective receptions, attended college fairs and help co-op students with housing and job searches.
