Robert H. Devine ’67, President of Antioch College since 1996, has requested that the Antioch University Board of Trustees accept his resignation as President effective immediately. Bob has cited continuing health concerns as a reason to step down from the demands of the College Presidency. All of you are undoubtedly aware of the day-to-day challenges, both on and off campus, that face our College presidents. When Bob returns to campus, he will focus his talents and skills on fund-raising for a College campaign. He will also continue as a classroom professor at the College. When Bob became President, he made it clear that his health was a priority given that his cancer had just recently gone into remission. We respect and support his decision to take care of himself at this critical time and look forward to his speedy recovery, During his five years as Antioch’s President, Bob has led significant changes in the College, most significantly building the faculty, enrollment and reputation. Last year’s NSSE (National Survey on Student Engagement) report is a fine example of the results of this hard work. Since Bob accepted the Presidency, the College’s endowment has more than doubled. Bob’s charismatic personality, relationships with alumni and students, and passion for the College make him extremely valuable in undertaking significant fund-raising activities. This is the most important assignment at the College and will assure our future vitality. I am particularly pleased that Bob and I will be working closely together in campaign activities when he returns to work. We are actively working on recruiting an Interim College President. In the meantime, Chancellor James W. Hall will assume the role of Acting President and will work collaboratively with College faculty and staff in order to continue to provide the best possible education for our students. In my 18 years on the Board working on behalf of the College, I have experienced many of its transitions. The ongoing interest and support of the Antioch Community has been so important in previous transitions and will contribute so much to the strength and viability of this place we all love. I look forward to the opportunity to meet, speak or communicate with many of you in the months to come.
