Desire and Duty at Oneida:
Tirzah Miller’s Intimate Memoir (Indiana University Press, 2000) was
edited by Robert S. Fogarty, Professor of History at Antioch College
and Editor of the Antioch Review. The book, according to Fogarty, offers
a story “about sexual communism, about ‘consanguineous love,’ about music
as it influences intimate relationships, about a community that struggled
– in the most intimate ways – to define a social and sexual agenda that
honored both community and commitment.” A unique record of nineteenth
century life, Desire and Duty is a dramatic account of the Oneida
Community’s history as gleaned from its recently opened archives.
