Rebecca Zwick ’75 is the author of Fair Game? The Use of Standardized Admissions Tests in Higher Education. Her new book gives us a rare look inside the tests that can determine who gets admitted and who doesn’t. Drawing on her many years as an analyst for the ETS (Educational Testing Service), which develops and administers these exams, Zwick offers the first balanced overview of the many-headed debate about the usefulness and reliability of standardized tests. Do tests predict success in school or in life? How will the advent of computerized, adaptive testing change the face of educational measurement? How much weight do they actually hold in the admission process? How can tests be made more fair for those who can’t afford pricey tutors? Amidst the hysteria, pressure, and fear that surround college admissions, Fair Game? demystifies the world of testing, presenting a common sense view of the system, and warning that eliminating the tests - as recently proposed in California - may not level the playing field for minorities. Rebecca is Professor of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an expert on testing. Her articles have appeared in Education Week and Phi Delta Kappan.
