The Faculty of Today

Faculty in Languages, Literature, and Cultures
Concentrations: Literature, Creative Writing, French, German, Japanese, Spanish

Jean Gregorek, Associate Professor of Literature. Favorite Courses: Literary and Cultural Theory and Postcolonial Texts. Jean spent much of her well-deserved sabbatical researching nineteenth-century industrial novels at the British Library in London.

In October of 2002, Jean presented a paper at the Annual Meeting of the Modernist Studies Association, and in December of 2002, she attended a meeting of the Modern Language Association in New York City. Jean will attend the inaugural meeting of the Cultural Studies Association in Pittsburgh this June and is giving a paper at the Interdisciplinary 19th-Century Studies Association’s Conference in London in July.

Benjamin Scott Grossberg, Assistant Professor of Creative Writing and Literature. Favorite Courses: Introduction to Shakespeare and Advanced Shakespeare. Ben’s personal achievements this year include reading a poem at the wedding of his oldest brother (writing something he felt okay about reading on such an important occasion) and running two marathons.

Ben also set a personal and enviable record for himself in terms of how many poems he had accepted in one calendar year: eight. His work appeared in Paris Review, Green Mountains Review, Cimarron Review, Mid-American Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, Western Humanities Review, and Seattle Review.

Harold Wright, Professor of Japanese and Program Director of Field Studies in Kyoto, Japan. Favorite Course: Fundamentals of Japanese Language, Literature, and Culture. Harold traveled all over Japan this past summer collecting stories for a book called Remnants of the Japanese Oral Tradition.

Harold also published a short story called “Winter in New Orleans” in Livermore Street, the student-run literary journal at Antioch, and he told Japanese stories at many schools and festivals.
