in the Physical Sciences David Kammler, Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry. Favorite Course: Organic Chemistry II. This year David wrote and published his thesis, Studies Toward the Synthesis of Apiosporamide. An abstract of Kammler’s thesis reads: “Apiosporamide, isolated from the coprophilous fungus Apiospora montagnei, is a structurally unique member of an important and rapidly growing class of bioactive natural products called pyridone antibiotics. These compounds display a wide variety of biological activities, from potentially beneficial to extremely harmful. Due to their potent and varied effects, these compounds have attracted a great deal of attention from the chemical and pharmaceutical communities. Significant advances toward the synthesis of this natural product were achieved.” Brenda Moore, Assistant Professor of Biology. Favorite Course: Brenda writes: “Whatever I happen to be teaching at the time. I like all of them!” Brenda has been working with the citizens of nearby Cedarville, Ohio, on the problem of raw sewage being dumped into Massie Creek. She has assisted with procuring microbial testing supplies and has taught people how to test and monitor their water. Brenda and colleague Peter Townsend, Professor of Geology and Environmental Science, addressed the Citizens of Massie Creek in November of 2002. Both faculty members, along with many of their students, have attended meetings in Cedarville and have been involved in the public forums intended to raise the issue of sewage problems with the county commissioners and state and federal Environmental Protection Agency officials. Elizabeth (Eli) Nettles, Assistant Professor of Mathematics. Favorite Course: Differential Equations. Eli recently bought a house just outside of town with her fiancé John Smith. During the summer of 2002, she attended the NSF (National Science Foundation) funded SENCER conference designed to encourage the interdisciplinary nature of general education science courses. Eli is currently preparing her dissertation for publication: TN-Systems of the Mathieu Group, M11. Eli also took a van full of Antioch students to Ohio Wesleyan University for the Five-College Math Contest in February of 2003.
