Antioch of Today
By Rachel Mouton '97

Inspired by 150 years of tradition, Antioch students of today are doing tremendous, life-changing work - work that will reach far beyond Antioch - for the sake of science, art, and social change. Like Antiochians of the past, today’s students embrace Horace Mann’s dictum and use the combination of classroom, co-op, and community to build a unique and well-rounded education. They each have a faculty member who has played a key role in their Antioch experience, often providing both academic and personal guidance.

Spring term at Antioch is an intense experience whether you’re working on your senior project or among those who bear witness to some of the most innovative and challenging work the College has yet to produce. It is a time when Antioch’s fourth and fifth year students focus in on all the experiences that have preceded this final trimester, using that focus to present work that will carry them into their post-Antioch careers. The term culminates in readings, art openings, concerts, performances, lectures, and debates. There are frequently too many events to attend them all, and one should plan to arrive early at venues like the Little Art Theatre in downtown Yellow Springs for student film and video screenings in order to get a seat. It is undoubtedly the most impressive time of year to be on campus.

Antioch students of today pick from eight interdisciplinary majors: Arts; Social and Global Studies (SGS); Cultural and Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS); Language, Literature and Culture (LLC); History, Philosophy, Religious Studies (HPR); Self, Society and Culture (SSC); Physical Science (PS); or Environmental and Biological Sciences (ENBS). Within these majors there are many concentrations to choose from, including but certainly not limited to ceramics, creative writing, biomedical sciences, political science, women’s studies, video, education, sociology, theatre, and African studies. Students may also opt for a double major or a self-design major, selecting work from two concentrations that they weave together through co-op, study abroad, the classroom, and their senior project.

Join us in celebrating the accomplishments of a few of Antioch's current students and graduates:
