Antioch Welcomes a New Chancellor
James H. Craiglow earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1963 from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. He did graduate study in history at New York University and State University of New York at Oneonta before becoming a history teacher at a private secondary school in Troy, New York. This was only the beginning of Craiglow's education as a student and as a professional. Craiglow later went on to attend and graduate from Antioch New England Graduate School in Keene, NH with a master's degree in management in 1977. The same year, in a mere matter of months, Craiglow was offered a job by friend, teacher and top executive at the graduate school, Lewis M. Feldstein. In 1977, Craiglow began his second career. He became Feldstein's top lieutenant and, in 1986, succeeded his mentor for the top job. After 16 years at the helm, Craiglow, now 60, has stepped down from his position at ANE in order to become the Chancellor of Antioch University. Craiglow led Antioch New England Graduate School to surging enrollment and, in 1994, moved it to a new home in a renovated furniture factory building. He was also instrumental in fostering a more intimate connection between the school and its surrounding region. The school credits Craiglow with much of its current stability. The work Craiglow did to connect the graduate school to its environment is an achievement that reflects his commitment to the College and to the region. His personal connections to the school are apparent, but his family connects him even more closely to the region. His wife, Shelley W. Craiglow, teaches in the Keene State College Education Department and at Wheelock School in Keene. The couple's daughter, Brittany, graduated from Keene High School and is about to finish her sophomore year at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Craiglow has two other daughters in their 30s -- Hilary is a 1992 College alumna -- and four grandchildren. Craiglow made a name for himself as a planner, a man behind the scenes able to hand over projects to his faculty and students and to give them the credit they deserve. Mitchell Thomashow, chairman of Antioch's environmental studies department, says, "There are certain people who are very dramatic. They call attention to themselves. Jim is the opposite. He's subtle. He's very much an everyday leader." Thomashow and Craiglow have worked together since the '70s.
Jim now brings the same strengths to his work with the AU Board of
Trustees and the University Leadership Council.
