Antioch's New PhD. in Leadership Starts Strong!

By Laurien Alexandre, University-wide Dean and PhD Director

Antioch University's new and distinctive PhD in Leadership and Change Program opened its doors in January 2002. In less than a year, the program already has a vibrant, geographically dispersed learning community of approximately 40 doctoral students representing a tremendous diversity in terms of profession, age, gender and ethnicity. Approximately 20% of our student body are Antioch graduates.

The program also has hired its first two founding faculty, scholars with national reputations and a strong commitment to Antioch's values: Dr. Elizabeth Holloway, Professor of Psychology, who comes to Antioch after her faculty years at the University of Wisconsin -- Madison, and Dr. Richard Couto, Professor of Leadership, a political scientist who comes to the program from the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond, Virginia.

Members of this interdisciplinary learning community are drawn together by the chance to engage in the advanced study and practice of leadership. There is strong support for both peer and individualized learning. Given the program's competency-based design, students are awarded credit for the satisfactory demonstration of learning based on rigorous doctoral-level standards.

Students and faculty meet quarterly at intensive and stimulating residencies held at Antioch campuses around the country. These residencies offer small seminars, lectures, and elective sessions around the curriculum's focus on leadership and change, inquiry and research. Residencies also provide time with advisors and rich interactions with other students and faculty. At the Summer residency, held in Yellow Springs, a guest panel on higher education reform featured three university presidents. Another residency guest was the renowned civil rights leader, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, who shared his stories of leading Birmingham's justice movement. The upcoming Winter residency, to be held at

Antioch Seattle, will feature Mitchell Kapor, founder of Lotus, and a visionary leader in the high tech field.

New student cohorts enter once a year in Summer. The application deadline for the next cohort is February 14, 2003.
