National Search Planned to Find New President

Antioch University will launch a search for a new president of Antioch College by the end of October 2003. This nationwide search for Antioch College will be the first conducted since 1994. Joan Straumanis ’57, Antioch College’s current president, was hired in February 2002 with a specific time-bound charge to lead Antioch College through June 30, 2004.

Antioch University Chancellor Jim Craiglow was optimistic that a national search would yield a strong pool of candidates. Craiglow said, “Antioch College continues to have a distinctive brand in American higher education, and I firmly believe that there are strong, energetic and entrepreneurial leaders out there who

would relish the challenge to be part of a ground floor effort to renew Antioch College. It’s not difficult to find leaders who are strong at basic maintenance, but we will have to work hard to find those candidates who can provide a sustained commitment to a turnaround effort. Our networks are strong and extensive, and we ought to be able to do it.”

At this point in time, the primary leadership qualifications are being identified for the ad text and a “Search Profile” will address Antioch College’s distinguished history and its current challenges and opportunities. Craiglow will manage the search, but will appoint a member of the College community to serve as the Chairperson and to liaison with him in the process. It is expected that the full Search and Screen Committee will be appointed by mid-November. Craiglow indicated that there might be a circumstance where an outside consultant or firm will be engaged. “If we find early on that we are having trouble attracting a qualified pool of applicants, we might choose to seek additional help in that effort.”

Of Straumanis, Craiglow said, “Under some difficult circumstances, Joan has worked hard to provide direction on resolving challenging issues, provided new linkages with alumni and friends of the College, and has brought energy and passion to her work. I’m confident that her commitment to building a strong management team and her attention to admissions and retention in the remaining months of her term will be critical foundation pieces for the next president to inherit.”
