State of the College Q&A

Attendants to Reunion 2003 had an opportunity to ask the President a few questions. The following is an excerpt from that discussion.

ALUM: Where federal grants are concerned, is it true that the number of donors count even more than the amount they donate?

JOAN: Yes. Foundations, as well as the federal government, care about what percentage of alumni give to the College. If you have only a little bit of money to spare, please send us that little bit to help increase those numbers. We currently have a little more than 1/3 of our alumni donating. That’s not enough.

ALUM: What’s the status of Community Government?

JOAN: Let me introduce Mavis Gruver, our terrific community manager.

MAVIS: CG is vital and alive. We are on the second floor of the Union. I work with four other people. Maggie, Office Manager; Caroline, Budget Manager; Mica, Events Manager; and Avory, Diversity Coordinator, which is a more recent job. The Diversity Coordinator works with the Office of Multicultural Affairs to make sure different trainings and events happen in order to celebrate the diversity we have in our community and to encourage more. There’s community meeting every week, and there are many committees that still function through ComCil and AdCil.

JOAN: AdCil and ComCil are still alive. My policy has been that all policy changes, tenure decisions and senior administration appointments go through AdCil. You would recognize AdCil; it is just what you would recognize and is relatively unchanged since the ’30s.

ALUM: I understand you’re not a long-term president. In the intervening year, what do you wish to see happen, and how would you like to see your legacy continued?

JOAN: I am an old lady, I admit it. I don’t want to be a long-term president. I agreed to come for a short time. I hope to leave the College safer and in better shape than I found it. That’s all I can realistically expect or promise.
