Antioch of Today
- By Rachel Moulton ’97

Name: Gwendolyn Ross
Major: Social & Global Studies
Project Title: SEWA
Influential Faculty: Christiane Olivo,
Former Assistant Professor of Political Science, & Hassan Rahmanian, Associate Professor of Administration and Management

Gwendolyn Ross ’03 is a Social and Global Studies (SGS) major, a world traveler, a student of Buddhism, and a pilot-to-be. Her co-ops and study terms have placed her all over the world—from Daytona Beach, Florida, to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Bodh Gaya, India. Her interests are diverse but Antioch provides a means of integration.

During her second semester, Gwendolyn took Bureaucracy and Democracy: “Christiane Olivo is the person who got me into SGS. I had a few classes with her, and she was really good. Hassan Rahmanian is also really good. His classes are hard, but for the rest of my life, I’ll use what I learned from him for everything.”

Gwendolyn’s senior project uses the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) as an example of how oppressed women have created and can continue to create their own educational system. She is researching development and developmental agencies: “I don’t exactly want to say that SEWA should be copied, but I do want to point out that they have a lot of good ideas so that developmental agencies will get an idea to use more grassroots organizing.” SEWA was started in 1972 in a small city in India.

Gwendolyn has been strongly influenced by her classes and co-ops, but she sees Antioch Education Abroad’s Buddhist Studies in India program as her biggest influence.

After graduation she hopes to go back to India. Perhaps after that she will apply to law school and finish the hours necessary to get her pilot’s license. Whether in law school or traveling in Italy, she is clearly prepared to shape her own future.

Watch for more senior profiles in the next issue of the Antiochian.
