Farewell to Michael Murphy
- By Rachel Moulton '97

Long-time Antioch employee and Yellow Springs resident Michael Murphy, currently Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, is moving out of his office in Ohio and into a new office in Dublin, Ireland. Michael has recently accepted a position as the Deputy CEO of the Dublin City University Educational Trust. Michael has been working at Antioch College for nearly nine years, splitting his time between Development and Alumni Relations, and Admissions and Financial Aid.

Michael has had an interest in global philanthropy for years and will be helping to build an alumni giving program for Dublin City University. His personal interest in living abroad has been a huge motivation for accepting the new position: “It’s a chance to help build a really interesting university in Ireland, and a chance for my wife and I to live in Dublin, one of the great cities in the world.” Michael will leave Antioch in March, leaving only two weeks to prepare for this major life change: “We’re selling everything! We’re only taking our dog.”

The search committee organized upon Michael’s resignation is in full swing and is doing their best to fill his shoes. Michael says he will miss Antioch, but feels the current staff is extraordinarily strong: “The leadership team, excluding me, has about 30 years of experience. There are also people here who are very new and very engaged and passionate and committed. I’m not worried about the transition. My successor will be blessed to have such a great group of people to work with.”

Michael encourages Antioch to continue to celebrate its differences— whether this is the lack of an athletics program, its small size, or its cooperative education program—and he encourages alumni to get involved: “Alumni play an important role in Admissions and tie it all together. You have people looking back on their education and people looking forward at their education. Putting those two groups together is the most powerful marketing tool at any college. So perhaps alumni should be ashamed to die until they’ve recruited a prospective student for Antioch College.”

Michael will be missed at Antioch and in Yellow Springs. The community wishes him well!
